Meta Ads vs Google Ads for Ecommerce: Which Should You Start With?
Start with Meta Ads when your product needs to be discovered or demonstrated. Start with Google Search Ads when shoppers already search for what you sell and you can compete on the offer, delivery, and price. Run both when each has a clear role and your budget can support a useful test.
That is a starting framework, not a prediction of which platform will produce cheaper customers. A fashion launch and a replacement-part store face different buying decisions, even if both sell online in Nigeria.
The useful question is: where can your next marketing naira reach a likely buyer at a cost your margin can support?
This guide focuses on that channel decision. For the wider system around acquisition, checkout, and repeat purchases, read our ecommerce marketing guide for Nigerian online stores.
Meta Ads vs Google Ads: the practical difference
Meta advertising on Facebook and Instagram can put your product in front of people while they browse content. The creative has to earn attention and make the offer relevant before the shopper decides to visit your store.
Google Search advertising responds to a search. The query gives you a clue about what the shopper wants, although a search can still be research rather than an immediate buying decision.
Consider two hypothetical stores:
- A new accessories brand can show how a bag looks, what fits inside, and how customers style it. A demonstration gives someone a reason to consider a product they were not actively searching for.
- A store selling replacement blender parts can build a page around a particular model. Someone searching for that part already has a specific problem to solve.
These are reasons to test a channel, not evidence that one category always belongs on one platform. An accessories shopper may search for a specific bag, and a replacement-part demonstration may work well in a social feed.
Also, Google Ads includes more than Search. Google's Performance Max documentation describes campaigns that can run across Search, YouTube, Display, and other Google inventory. Comparing Meta with Google Search gives you a clearer first decision than treating every Google campaign as the same product.
When Meta Ads may be the better first test
Meta is worth considering first when you have a product that becomes more appealing once people see it in use.
Useful starting conditions include:
- You can explain a specific benefit through a short demonstration, photo, or customer story.
- You have genuine reviews or product proof that answer common objections.
- Your offer gives a new shopper a clear reason to act.
- You can produce and review fresh creative regularly.
- The landing page delivers the product and promise shown in the ad.
For example, a homeware brand could test three different reasons to buy the same storage product: saving space, organising a kitchen, and giving a practical housewarming gift. Each angle should lead to a page that supports that use case.
The commitment is ongoing creative work. Changing an audience setting cannot answer a buyer's concern about quality, dimensions, or delivery. If the team cannot supply new product footage, accurate claims, and timely approvals, the campaign has fewer useful ideas to test.
Our Facebook and Instagram Ads service connects campaign management with creative testing and the experience after the click.
When Google Search Ads may be the better first test
Search deserves a closer look when customers can describe what they want and your store has a relevant page for it.
Before allocating spend, investigate:
- Whether people search for your product, category, or the problem it solves in locations you deliver to.
- Whether those searches suggest buying intent or mostly requests for information.
- Whether your product is available at a competitive total cost, including delivery.
- Whether the page matches the query closely enough to help the shopper decide.
- Whether the likely cost of a sale fits your margin.
“Buy office chair in Lagos” and “how to repair an office chair” suggest different needs. A page selling a new chair may be a strong match for the first query and a poor match for the second. Review the search traffic you actually receive rather than assuming every visitor wants to purchase.
Keep searches for your own brand separate from searches by people discovering the category. A branded campaign can capture someone who already knows you. Its results alone do not establish how well Google finds new customers.
If this is the likely starting channel, our Google Ads service covers the connection between search intent, landing pages, and conversion tracking.
What about Google Shopping in Nigeria?
Product-feed campaigns deserve a separate eligibility check. Google's supported countries and currencies currently list Nigeria and Nigerian naira for Shopping ads and free listings. The same documentation distinguishes country support from availability of the Shopping tab.
This does not mean every product or account is automatically approved. Check your target market, Merchant Center eligibility, product data, shipping information, and applicable policies before making a feed-based campaign part of the plan.

Choose with your margin before comparing ROAS
A platform can report attractive revenue while leaving too little money to operate the business. Work backwards from an order before setting your acquisition target.
Here is a hypothetical first-order calculation, not a market benchmark:
- Revenue after discounts: NGN 40,000.
- Product cost, packaging, payment fees, delivery subsidy, and an allowance for returns: NGN 26,000.
- Contribution before marketing: NGN 14,000.
- Amount reserved for overhead and profit: NGN 4,000.
- Allocated creative and management cost per order: NGN 2,000.
- Amount remaining for advertising: NGN 8,000 per order.
In this example, spending NGN 8,000 to generate NGN 40,000 of revenue implies a 5x revenue-to-ad-spend ratio. A 3x result would miss this store's target even though it might look impressive in a screenshot.
The allocation changes with sales volume and actual costs. Recalculate when discounts, delivery costs, product mix, or fees change. Only use future repeat purchases to justify a higher acquisition cost when your customer history and cash position support that decision.
Apply the same economic target to both channels. Cheaper clicks are useful only if enough of those visitors become worthwhile customers.
How to test without spreading the budget too thin
There is no automatic reason to divide a small budget equally between Meta and Google. Choose the strongest initial hypothesis and give it a defined test.
- Select the product and destination. Use an offer with available stock, clear delivery terms, and a working mobile checkout.
- Write the hypothesis. For Meta, it might be that a demonstration answers the main purchase objection. For Search, it might be that a specific group of commercial queries brings qualified buyers.
- Set a spending limit and evaluation window. Base these on your affordable cost per order, cash constraints, and the time customers normally take to buy. A few clicks cannot settle the decision.
- Check measurement before judging performance. Confirm that purchases, revenue, and currency are recorded correctly and an order is not counted twice within the same tracking setup.
- Review what happened after the click. Examine product views, carts, checkout, paid orders, cancellations, and returns. Record what each test teaches you.
If spend reaches the agreed limit without a convincing result, investigate the offer, traffic, page, and measurement before extending it. Opening another campaign does not resolve an unanswered diagnosis.
When running both channels makes sense
Adding a second channel makes sense when it addresses a clear opportunity and you can fund it without starving the first test.
A shopper might discover your product on Instagram, search for the brand later, and then purchase. Meta and Google may both claim credit under their respective attribution settings. Adding their reported revenue together can therefore overstate what the store earned.
Review platform reports alongside store orders, total advertising spend, new-customer counts, and contribution after marketing. Separate branded search, returning customers, and existing-customer campaigns where possible. A storewide revenue-to-spend ratio provides context, but it does not prove how many sales advertising caused.
Common questions about Meta Ads and Google Ads
Which platform is cheaper for ecommerce in Nigeria?
Neither is universally cheaper. Compare the cost of completed, economically worthwhile orders. Product demand, competition, creative, conversion rate, and delivery all affect the result.
Should a new store run both immediately?
Only if it can support meaningful tests on both. A focused first test is often easier to interpret when the store has limited budget, few sales, or an unproven offer.
Can an agency help decide the channel mix?
Yes. Ask it to explain the demand evidence, creative requirements, margin assumptions, and measurement plan behind its recommendation. If you are deciding whether to bring in support, read when an ecommerce brand should hire an agency.
